What is an OTB Analog Mix?

In an OTB mix, part of the signal physically leaves the DAW and passes through analog consoles and processors before returning to the digital domain. At StudioGaudio, this approach coexists with software tools: it is not an ideological choice, but a hybrid workflow built around the track.

Equalization, dynamics, saturation, automation, and processing are chosen on a case-by-case basis to achieve the desired character and balance.

The Heart of the Mix: AMEK Angela

The 51-channel AMEK Angela is at the center of StudioGaudio's analog signal path. The mix can pass through the console and the studio's outboard gear while retaining the flexibility of digital production.

An AMEK Angela with a story to tell

Before arriving at StudioGaudio, this AMEK Angela was at Danilo Dalmasso's Blue Record Studio, in Piedmont. A control room that over the years has welcomed numerous protagonists of Italian and international music.

Photographs and press clippings preserve a piece of that history. Today, the same console continues its journey at StudioGaudio, integrated into a contemporary hybrid workflow dedicated to mixing.

A history also documented by the press

Period documents tell the story of Blue Record Studio's activity and its relationship with artists and musicians. We present them as a testimony to the history of the studio from which the console originates, without automatically attributing every session to this specific AMEK.

Today, the AMEK Angela is the analog heart of StudioGaudio's control room: its story continues within a modern system, alongside the DAW and the studio's outboard gear.

An Artistic Choice

Analog and Digital: We choose what the track needs

There is no winner between analog and digital. They are different tools. Digital offers precision, instant recall, and highly detailed intervention capabilities; analog provides a different signal behavior and physical interaction with consoles and outboard gear. The mix comes from the combination best suited to the music.

ITB

Precision and Control

Editing, automation, recall, and digital processing when they are the most effective solution.

OTB

Console and Outboard

The signal leaves the DAW and is processed through the analog path when the project requires it.

StudioSoundFlow

Analog Mixing, Online Too

Distance should not turn a mix into an impersonal file exchange. With StudioSoundFlow, you can follow the session remotely and listen to the Program Audio while we work on the mix.

The online workflow thus becomes part of the creative process: you can collaborate with the engineer during the session without being physically in the control room.

FAQ

Questions about Analog Mixing

What does OTB mixing mean?

"OTB" stands for "Out of the Box": part of the audio signal leaves the DAW and is processed through analog hardware, such as mixing consoles and outboard gear, before returning to the digital system.

Is analog mixing better than digital mixing?

No. Analog and digital offer different tools and behaviors. At StudioGaudio we choose the workflow based on the track and the artistic result, without considering one technology universally superior to the other.

Can I get an analog mix online?

Yes. You can send your tracks remotely and follow the process online. StudioSoundFlow allows you to join the remote session and listen to the Program Audio while we work.

Which console is used?

The heart of StudioGaudio's analog path is the 51-channel AMEK Angela console, integrated with the outboard gear and the studio's digital workflow.

Do I need to prepare the tracks in a specific format?

Before the session, we agree on project export and organization to ensure we receive properly aligned tracks that are ready for the mix.
